Pre-Lab work for Identifying Unknown Salts
Purpose
The purpose of this lab is to identify three unknown salts (dissolved in water). You will be preforming the following tests:
- Flame Test - To determine the metal in the salt
- Litmus Test - To determine if your salt is slightly acidic or basic when dissolved in water
- Reaction with Barium Chloride (BaCl2) - To detect the presence of sulphate ions (SO4-2)
- Reaction with Silver Nitrate (AgNO3) - To detect the presence of chlorine ions (Cl-1)
- Electrical Conductivity Test - To determine if your salt dissolves in water and conducts electricity
Watch the following videos to see the experiments in which you will be expected to preform in the lab. Then answer the prelab questions assigned.
